Vineyard information
This vineyard is located within the Heathcote region in Victoria, and is at an elevation of 340m. The majority of soil under vine is Cambrian – red and deep with excellent water retention.
Small, concentrated grapes are the result, and they make rich, concentrated wines. The soils are also notable because they impart deep intrinsic characters – almost a sense of place or terroir – to the wines.
2016 growing season
Heathcote had one of the coldest winters in recent memory, and the driest lead into a warm and dry spring and early summer; harvest was the earliest on record. A stand out vintage, by the far the best we have seen in a very long time. We had beautiful consistent warm days throughout the growing season coupled with cool nights and foggy mornings, ensuring slow and steady ripeness. For one of the driest growing seasons on record, we produced a low yielding crop with high natural acid, developed flavours and wine colour.
Winemaker comments
This Heathcote Montepulciano is defined by its inky depth of colour, and deep, dark, complex fruit. Voluptuous and well balanced, acid and tannin meld together in a way that does not dominate the fruit, but gives the wine great cellaring ability.
